Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center

Our Belief

Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center (SAEHC) recognizes that you, our volunteers, are the true heart and soul of our organization and that it would be impossible to accomplish our mission without the sacrifices you make on our clients’ behalf. Your complete unselfishness in giving your time, talents and treasures is beyond compare and truly makes our organization’s programs successful.
SAEHC is dedicated to creating a pleasant, helpful, and fun environment in which our volunteers are utilized at all levels of the agency. We strongly encourage you, our volunteers, to challenge yourselves and develop to your full potential. We are further committed to actively recruiting volunteers that reflect the cultural diversity and needs of our community. In addition, we will participate in ongoing, reciprocal exchanges of information and ideas with our volunteers in order to actively increase the level of quality services that are afforded to our clients.
Thank you for your commitment and dedication to the Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center!
Sincerely, Janice Wagaman Community Partnerships Coordinator

    On-going Volunteer Projects Include:

    Family Fun Fridays
Help us provide an afternoon of family fun for families experiencing homelessness. This is a great opportunity for groups of employees looking to give back in a fun way on a Friday afternoon. You have the freedom to determine what fun activities you would like to do and we will help facilitate. Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center's Family Shelter serves 13 families with children who are currently experiencing homelessness. It is the only shelter in Sacramento County that keeps families together by accepting fathers and sons over the age of 14.

    Dates and Times
Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm

    Girls Night In
Instead of going out, why not stay in? Bring a group of friends and a fun activity to our new event, the Girls Night In. Bond with women experiencing homelessness while enjoying a night with the girls. Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center's Women's Refuge is a local emergency shelter for 12 homeless women. We are looking to provide the women with a fun, social experience to take their mind off of their stressful situation.

    Dates and Times
Saturday from 6 pm to 8 pm

    Kid's Club
Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center is seeking fun-loving, positive people to interact with children living in our Family Shelter. Volunteers are needed to help with 10-25 kids ranging from 1 to 17 year of age. Experience working with children and the ability to make a weekly commitment is a plus but not necessary. Teen volunteers are sought to help tutor children in our Homework Club.

    Dates and Times
Homework Club: Monday - Thursday from 3 pm to 5 pm
Kid's Club: Tuesday - Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm

    Crafts Classes
Do you love to knit or crochet? Is painting your pleasure? Would you like to teach your craft to women in need? Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center is looking for knitting and/or crochet instructors to teach at our women’s shelter on a regular basis. We have all the supplies; we just need someone willing to share their hobby. Come teach women who are escaping homelessness the best stress relief method around!

    Dates and Times
Saturday from 3 pm to 5 pm

    Other Opportunities Include:

    • Group cleaning or improvement projects
    • Organize a Donation Drive!
    • Organize a car wash or other fundraiser
    • Any creative idea you might have (we love to hear your ideas!)

Volunteer of the Month: Charleen Pfanner

CharleenSaturday nights are a lot more fun at the Women's Refuge, thanks to our wonderful volunteer: Charleen Pfanner. Charleen graduated from CSU, Chico in 2002 with a BA in Art and a minor in Business Administration, but quickly realized that pursuing medicine was the best way to use her talents. With this, she went back to school to American River College and CSU, Sacramento and graduated last year with a BS in Biology in hopes that medical school would be in her future. When school ended, Charleen looked for volunteer opportunities that offered a chance to make a difference in her hometown. She found what she was looking for in Girl's Night. The experience allows her to meet new people and have fun every other Saturday. At the moment, Charleen is waiting to see if various medical schools have granted her an interview and she is hoping to start medical school next year! She is an amazing and caring person who brings fun and laughter wherever she goes. Please join us in thanking her for the hard work and dedication she has shown to the Women's Refuge. THANK YOU CHARLEEN!

SAEHC Volunteer is Awarded Volunteer of the Year

Wilma Wilma Champlin was chosen as the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Helping Those Less Fortunate at the Volunteer Spirit Awards. We have been blessed to have Wilma in our lives over the last year. A former costumer, Wilma teaches weekly sewing classes at our Women’s Refuge. Wilma has been busy beautifying our shelters, making new curtains, painting, collecting furniture and artwork. Her dedication to one program in particular, our Extended Shelter Program for women, has led to it being renamed “Wilma’s Place.”
