SAEHC Volunteer Opportunities

SAEHC will not be taking on any new volunteers after January 15th to give us time to train our new Community Partnerships Coordinator. Interested volunteers are welcome to fill out our application, but there will be a delay of 1 to 2 months before you will be able to begin volunteering.

If you are interested in any of the activities below, please complete our

on-line application

Please note that volunteers between the ages of 16 and 18 are only allowed to volunteer during our Homework Club in children services with their parents' consent and a DOJ background check.

On-going Projects Include:

Family Fun Fridays
Help us provide an afternoon of family fun for families experiencing homelessness. This is a great opportunity for groups of employees looking to give back in a fun way on a Friday afternoon. You have the freedom to determine what fun activities you would like to do and we will help facilitate. Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center's Family Shelter serves 13 families with children who are currently experiencing homelessness. It is the only shelter in Sacramento County that keeps families together by accepting fathers and sons over the age of 14.

Dates and Times
Friday from 3 pm to 5 pm

Girls Night In
Instead of going out, why not stay in? Bring a group of friends and a fun activity to our new event, the Girls Night In. Bond with women experiencing homelessness while enjoying a night with the girls. Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center's Women's Refuge is a local emergency shelter for 12 homeless women. We are looking to provide the women with a fun, social experience to take their mind off of their stressful situation.

Dates and Times
Saturday from 6 pm to 8 pm

Be There for a Child in Need
Ever thought about volunteering to help disadvantaged children? Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center is seeking fun-loving, positive people to interact with children living in a local family homeless shelter. Volunteers are needed to help with 10-25 kids ranging from 1 to 17 year of age. Experience working with children and the ability to make a weekly commitment is a plus but not necessary. Teen volunteers are sought to help tutor children in our Homework Club.

Dates and Times
Homework Club: Monday - Thursday from 3 pm to 5 pm
Fun Time: Tuesday - Friday from 6 pm to 8 pm

Knitting and Crochet Classes
Do you love to knit or crochet? Would you like to teach your craft to women in need? Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center is looking for knitting and/or crochet instructors to teach at our women’s shelter on a regular basis. We have all the supplies; we just need someone willing to show the women the basic stitches and patterns. Come teach women who are escaping homelessness the best stress relief method around!

Dates and Times
Saturday from 3 pm to 5 pm

Other Opportunities Include:

  • Group cleaning or improvement projects
  • Organize a sheet and towel drive for shelters
  • Organize a car wash or other fundraiser
  • A creative idea you might have (we love to hear your ideas!)

SAEHC Volunteer is Awarded Volunteer of the Year

Wilma Wilma Champlin was chosen as the 2009 Volunteer of the Year Helping Those Less Fortunate at the Volunteer Spirit Awards. We have been blessed to have Wilma in our lives over the last year. A former costumer, Wilma teaches weekly sewing classes at our Women’s Refuge. Wilma has been busy beautifying our shelters, making new curtains, painting, collecting furniture and artwork. Her dedication to one program in particular, our Extended Shelter Program for women, has led to it being renamed “Wilma’s Place.”

Volunteer of the Month: Diamond Robertson

DiamondDiamond has been interning with our LIGHT Project Case Manager Spring Ackerman. She meets with clients needing rental or utilities assistance and helps process their applications. Diamond is dedicated to her volunteering and is amazing with the clients. She has even signed up to come back next semester to continue her work. She is a true asset to the SAEHC team and the Sacramento Community!
