We are excited to announce our Mather Community Campus 2nd Annual Sports Tournament. This year we will start a tradition
of a spring basketball tournament for teens in the area’s homeless facilities including Serna Village Permanent Housing
and St. John’s Shelter. This event was initiated by a Youth Development Specialist in our Mather Community Campus
Transitional Housing Program. |
With the construction of an All-Purpose Sports Court for the children of our Mather Community Campus (MCC), the ability to participate in a variety of sports after school and on weekends will be a reality. Basketabll, tennis, street hockey, badminton, and volleyball can all be played on this multi-purpose court. Over 120 youth, age 5-17, reside at MCC and will benefit from this court. The participation in athletic activities will decrease the incident of childhood obesity, increase good sportsmanship and self-esteem, and inspire the youth to look towards participating in activities in the community. Furthermore, strong bonds between Youth Development Specialists, parents, and their children have been developed through sports; an appropriate location to initiate these bonds is a necessity to continue these activities. The estimated cost of this court is $65,000. This includes the sports court surface, lights, bleachers, sports equipment, and the preparation of the land to construct the court itself. If you believe, like we do, that physical activities and organized sports is an important and powerful influence on at-risk youth’s life, please contact Devon Good, Director of Community Partnerships at dgood@saehc.org or 916-454-2120 x304.
